COEXISTENCE
Keep the WhatsApp Business app, add the API
For years the rule was simple: a number was either on the WhatsApp Business app on a phone or on the WhatsApp Business API, never both. Meta has changed that. With WhatsApp coexistence the number you already use in the app stays there, and the same number is connected to the platform as well — so your team answers from a shared inbox while you keep chatting on your phone.

What WhatsApp coexistence is
One number, two places, the same conversations.
Coexistence is Meta’s name for a WhatsApp Business app number that is also connected to the Cloud API. Nothing moves and nothing is re-registered: the phone keeps the number, the chats and the business profile, and Meta starts delivering the same conversations to the software you authorised as well.
A message a customer sends reaches both. A reply you type on the phone appears in ChatBridge24, marked as sent from the phone, and a reply a colleague sends from ChatBridge24 appears on the phone. Your customers see the same number and the same name they always have.
It is the answer for the business that grew up on the app — the number is on every card, every sign and every customer’s phone — and now needs several people to answer it, or a system to send on it, without giving up the app.
How to connect a WhatsApp Business app number
Three steps, with the phone in your hand.
Update the app and keep the phone close
Meta requires the WhatsApp Business app at version 2.24.17 or later. During the connection Meta asks you to confirm on the phone itself, so have it unlocked and the app open.
Press “Add Business App number”
It is on the WhatsApp Business API page in ChatBridge24. A Facebook window opens (allow pop-ups): sign in, type the number that is on the WhatsApp Business app and follow Meta’s steps for your business portfolio.
Confirm in the app and choose what to share
The WhatsApp Business app asks you to approve the connection and whether to share your chat history. There is no SMS code and no PIN — the number is never re-registered — and it appears in ChatBridge24 as soon as Meta confirms it.
What comes across, and when
Once, in the first 24 hours — and then everything, live.
- Your contacts. Every contact in the app that has a WhatsApp number is imported.
- Six months of chats, if you allow it. The most recent six months of one-to-one conversations are imported, so the history is there when a colleague opens a chat for the first time. Meta allows this request once, within 24 hours of connecting; ChatBridge24 makes it for you automatically.
- Photos and files from the last 14 days. Meta sends the files for recent media only. Anything older stays on the phone, and the imported message says so instead of showing an empty attachment.
- Everything from then on. Messages customers send, replies from ChatBridge24 and replies typed on the phone all arrive in the inbox as they happen.
The import runs in the background and does not disturb anyone: imported conversations are history, not new unread messages, and nothing is pushed into a CRM as new traffic.
What changes on the phone
Meta’s rules for a number that is on both.
Group chats stay on the phone
Meta does not synchronise group chats for a number on both, so they do not appear in ChatBridge24. Your groups keep working in the app exactly as before.
Broadcast lists become read-only
Existing lists can be read but no new ones can be made. Bulk sending moves to approved templates and WhatsApp marketing campaigns, which is what the platform is built for.
Some message types are switched off
Disappearing messages, view-once messages and live location are turned off for one-to-one chats, because a copy has to exist in two places.
Linked devices are unlinked once
When the number connects, its companion devices are logged out. You can link them again straight away; WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS are not supported.
Calls stay on the phone
Voice and video calls, the business profile and the app’s own business tools are not available through the Cloud API for a number on both. They carry on in the app.
The phone must stay in use
If the WhatsApp Business app is not opened for about 14 days, Meta disconnects the number from the platform. ChatBridge24 marks the number when that happens.
What it costs
Two senders, two prices.
What you type in the WhatsApp Business app stays free, as it always has been, and it is not bound by the 24-hour customer service window.
Messages sent from ChatBridge24 travel through the Cloud API and are charged by Meta like any other platform message: per message, by category and market. Free-text replies inside the 24-hour window are service messages, and each number gets 1,000 of those free a month. The details, with the dates that matter, are on WhatsApp Business API pricing.
On our side the number is billed like any other connected number: per number, with no seat charge — see ChatBridge24 pricing.
Limits worth knowing before you connect
Read these first; they decide whether it suits you.
- 20 messages per second. Meta fixes the throughput of a coexistence number at 20 messages a second. A number on the platform alone starts at 80 and can grow.
- The history import happens once. If sharing was declined in the app, earlier chats are not imported later; new messages arrive normally.
- The phone is part of the setup. Re-registering the number on a new phone, or moving it to the ordinary WhatsApp app, disconnects it from the platform.
- A message only the phone can show. Now and then a customer sends something the Cloud API cannot carry. ChatBridge24 shows that it arrived and that it can be read on the phone, rather than hiding it.
Coexistence or a dedicated number?
Both are right, for different businesses.
Choose coexistence when the number is already known to your customers, the owner still answers some chats from the phone, and the volume of automated sending is modest. Nobody has to learn a new number and the app keeps working.
Choose a dedicated number on the platform alone when several people answer all day, campaigns and a WhatsApp chatbot send at volume, or nobody should depend on one phone being switched on. It has the higher throughput and no phone to keep active. The WhatsApp Business API page explains how a number gets onto it.
Questions people actually ask
Short answers, current as of the date above.
Will my customers notice anything?
No. They keep messaging the same number and see the same name. Only the replies change: they can now come from anyone on your team.
Do I lose my chats on the phone?
No. The phone keeps everything. ChatBridge24 imports a copy of the last six months if you allow it, and both stay in step from then on.
Can I import my history later?
No. Meta allows the history request once, within 24 hours of connecting, and only if sharing was allowed in the app. ChatBridge24 sends it as soon as the number connects.
Why do my group chats not appear?
Meta does not synchronise group chats for a coexistence number, so ChatBridge24 never receives them. Groups carry on in the app on the phone.
Does it work with Bitrix24?
Yes. The ChatBridge24 app on the Bitrix24 Marketplace has the same “Add Business App number” button as the standalone workspace, and customer messages reach Bitrix24 Open Channels like those of any other connected number.
What if my number is on the ordinary WhatsApp app?
Coexistence is for the WhatsApp Business app only. WhatsApp offers to move a number from the ordinary app to the WhatsApp Business app on the same phone with its chats; after that it can be connected this way.
Can I disconnect later?
Yes. The number keeps working in the app, and ChatBridge24 shows that it is no longer connected rather than failing silently.
